X: The Brave New Era of Social Media

Remember Twitter? It was one of the founding fathers of social media and launched way back in 2006! With 368 million users as of 2022, this platform was considered a staple social channel by digital marketers all over the world. However, when billionaire Elon Musk bought the company back in October of 2022 the changes came thick and fast and as of the 24th July, Twitter has launched its biggest (and arguably worst) change yet!

A Brave New World

That’s to say that Twitter, with its universally recognised blue bird logo and catchy name has had a complete change of brand. Twitter is gone and it’s new name is… X. As Musk announced late on Friday night: “bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”

The new brand, X with it’s forgettable new logo is yet another jab in the ongoing social mega-corp punch up between Elon Musk and Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg however, aside from a new name, are there any other changes we should be aware of?

What’s New?

Well, initially there has been no change to the actual structure of the platform. In fact as of writing this article, the platform still features Twitter’s iconic blue colour scheme, to post content you still ‘tweet’ and sharing content is still classed as ‘retweeting’.

The long term goals for the platform however are notably more ambitious than they were under the Twitter banner. Musk is offering up X as the ‘everything app’ and with SpaceX already making leaps in space travel and xAI joining the roster of ‘X’ based companies, we can’t help but wonder if the X brand is looking to take ownership of the letter in a similar way to Apple with its association with ‘i’.

Speaking of xAI, this new ai startup was launched by Musk earlier this year and has the lofty goal of ‘understanding the true nature of the universe’ We’ll leave you to make up your own mind on the likelihood of that goal coming to fruition.
