What is Remarketing All About?

Remarketing sounds complicated, but it’s incredibly simple and can take your advertising strategy from zero to hero. Below I’ll explain what remarketing is and how it works, why it’s so effective, and its benefits to your site.

What is Remarketing?

Remarketing is the practise of serving targeted ads across the internet to people that have already been to your website, basically allowing the company to follow users around the internet  with ads in the goal of them coming back to your site. You may also see it named as ‘retargeting’.

There are various types of remarketing: video, search, display, dynamic, social media and customer list.

How does Remarketing work?

When a user visits your website, a few lines of code drops in a cookie in the users browser. This tracks the sites visited by the user, and tells the ad platform where they are, generating an advert about your site, thus sending them back to you.

For example, a user could visit your site, then watch an unrelated video on YouTube, where your advert pops up. This would remind them of you, resulting in them clicking and coming back to your site.

How much does it cost?

Remarketing costs will vary depending on how your campaigns fit into your marketing strategy. However, overall it is a very cost effective advertising technique, and similar to PPC, you only pay when the customer clicks on to the ad.

What are the benefits?

Remarketing reminds users that you are there, and that you have the solution to their problem. It can increase your conversion rates and ROI, as past visitors are familiar with your brand are more likely to become customers. Remarketing allows you to stay connected with your target audience, by gaining brand exposure and becoming recognisable and memorable to your target audience. This will also raise trust and brand visibility.
